up on the fence
I toe the narrow path
one foot in front of the other.

oh, I must keep moving,
eyes straight ahead, for
to stop and think is to fall.

on the edge of balance I sway
from wobble to repose
when suddenly a cool

breeze hits my face and
a spontaneous urge
overtakes me. dipping

at the knees, I set –
my body ready to spring
into joyful pirouette
